AP: Mo. auditor faults lawmakers for lobbyist gifts

AP reports "Missouri Auditor Susan Montee criticized lawmakers for potential conflicts of interest Monday for soliciting lobbyists to pay for meals, parties and retirement receptions. Montee said in separate but similar audits of the House and Senate that some expenses were not reported by lobbyists to the state Ethics Commission. She said lawmakers should 'reconsider the practice of soliciting donations from lobbyists' and should notify them of ethics requirements. . . . Montee is a Democrat up for re-election next year; the House and Senate are controlled by Republicans."

Steve Brown resigned Tuesday after admitting they conspired to obstruct an investigation related to Smith's unsuccessful 2004 congressional campaign. John Gillies, the FBI special agent in charge of the St. Louis office, said there has been a 'significant increase' in the number of public corruption cases being reported to and investigated by the agency. . . . Since arriving in St. Louis 22 months ago, Gillies said he has created a public corruption squad and made combating corruption the top priority within the FBI's eastern district of Missouri."
